Mango, Orange & Banana Smoothie, A New Favorite!

Mango, Orange & Banana Smoothie!

First let's chat a bit about the amazing health benefits of our ingredients (Remember, this was part of my sales pitch to my husband to fork over the money for the Vitamix).  But it is true, we are getting the most out of our fruits and veggies now and I'm already seeing the difference in our skin and our energy levels are improving too!

The Mighty Mango:  Mangos taste so good that people forget they are also healthy!  Discover how the “king of fruits” can help you.

Health Benefits:

1.  Prevents Cancer:
Research has shown antioxidant compounds in mango fruit have been found to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers. These compounds include quercetin, isoquercitrin, astragalin, fisetin, gallic acid and methylgallat, as well as the abundant enzymes.

2.  Lowers Cholesterol:
The high levels of fiber, pectin and vitamin C help to lower serum cholesterol levels, specifically Low-Density Lipoprotein (the bad stuff)

3.  Clears the Skin:
Can be used both internally and externally for the skin. Mangos clear clogged pores and eliminate pimples. (Read more on page 5.)

4.  Eye Health:
One cup of sliced mangoes supplies 25 percent of the needed daily value of vitamin A, which promotes good eyesight and prevents night blindness and dry eyes.

5.  Alkalizes the Whole Body:
The tartaric acid, malic acid, and a trace of citric acid found in the fruit help to maintain the alkali reserve of the body.

6. Helps in Diabetes:
Mango leaves help normalize insulin levels in the blood.  The traditional home remedy involves boiling leaves in water, soaking through the night and then consuming the filtered decoction in the morning. Mango fruit also have a relatively low glycemic index (41-60) so moderate quantities will not spike your sugar levels.

7. Improved Sex: Ooo la la....
Mangos are a great source of vitamin E. Even though the popular connection between sex drive and vitamin E was originally created by a mistaken generalization on rat studies, further research has shown balanced proper amounts (as from whole food) does help in this area.

8. Improves Digestion:
Papayas are not the only fruit that contain enzymes for breaking down protein. There are several fruits, including mangoes, which have this healthful quality. The fiber in mangos also helps digestion and elimination.

9. Remedy for Heat Stroke
Juicing the fruit from green mango and mixing with water and a sweetener helps to cool down the body and prevent harm to the body. From an ayurvedic viewpoint, the reason people often get diuretic and exhausted when visiting equatorial climates is because the strong “sun energy” is burning up your body, particularly the muscles.  The kidneys then become overloaded with the toxins from this process.

10. Boosts Immune system
The generous amounts of vitamin C and vitamin A in mangos, plus 25 different kinds of carotenoids keep your immune system healthy and strong.

The Astonishing Orange:

Oranges are one of the favorite fruits of the world. Not only do they taste delicious, they contain several vitamins. They can help protect our body from many harmful diseases and illnesses while having a number of cures.

Some of these benefits include:

• Asthma

You may also choose to include the orange zest into your diet for getting an extra 3 grams of fibre. If you wish to reach the daily intake, eat a few more fruits and vegetables and do nothing more.

Save money and moisturize!

You read me right. The skin of the orange contains natural oil. This oil is excellent for moisturizing your skin and keeping it young.

Instead of wasting hundreds of pounds a year, try using the natural way to keep your skin looking healthy. Therefore, you may use those hundreds of pounds for more important needs.

Let oranges fight cancer!

Vitamin c in oranges is an excellent nutrient which fights cancer. Another advantage is that the peel can also fight cancer with added benefits of lowering your cholesterol and keeping your blood pressure at the normal rate.
Protect your skin against skin disease!

Earlier, I mentioned about how the orange keeps your skin young and moisturized. Another health benefit of oranges is that there is a powerful antioxidant called Beta-carotene which protects skin cells from getting damaged.

Banana bana fo fama....Bananas:  Bananas consist mainly of sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fiber, which makes them ideal for an immediate and slightly prolonged source of energy

1. Reducing Depression
Bananas contain tryptophan, an aminoacid that can be converted to serotonin, leading
to improved mood

2. Anemia
Bananas are relatively high in iron, which helps the body’s hemoglobin function

3. Constipation and Diarrhea
Due to their content in fiber, they help restore a normal bowel function. In
addition, diarrhea usually depletes your body of important electrolytes (of which the
most important is potassium, contained in high amounts in bananas). They also contain
pectin, a soluble fiber (hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the
digestive tract.

4. Eyesight Protection
Research published in the Archives of Ophthalmology has proven that adults
consuming at least 3 servings of fruit per day have a reduced risk (by 36%) of developing
age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older
adults, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

5. Healthy Bones
Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound
that nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria
produce enzymes that increase our digestive ability and protect us from unhealthy
bacteria infections. Thanks to fructooligosaccharides, probiotic bacteria can increase
both in number and functionality, increasing our body’s ability to absorb calcium.
In addition, green bananas contain indigestible short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are
very nutrient to the cells that make up the mucosa of the stomach. These cells, when
healthy, absorb calcium much more efficiently

6. Healthy Kidney
About 190,000 cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed each year.
Research published in the International Journal of Cancer has shown that daily
consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, is highly protective to
kidney health. The results show that, over a long timeframe (13.4 years), women eating
more than 2.5 servings of fruits and vegetable per day cut their risk of kidney cancer by
40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Women eating bananas four to
six times a week halved their risk of developing the disease compared to those who did
not eat this fruit. The conclusion of the study is that frequent consumption of fruits
and vegetables, especially bananas, cabbage and root vegetables, may reduce risk of
kidney cancer. This is because bananas and many root vegetables contain especially high
amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds, while cabbage is rich in sulfur, necessary for
effective detoxification of potential carcinogens.

7. Blood Pressure
Bananas are extremely high in potassium (about 4673mg), yet very low in sodium (1mg),
thus having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure. So much so, the US Food
and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for
the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

8. Heartburn
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn,
try eating a banana for soothing relief.

9. Morning Sickness
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood-sugar levels up and avoid
morning sickness.

10. Smoking
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. They contain vitamins B6 and
B12 they contain, as well as potassium and magnesium: these substances help the body
recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

11. Ulcers
This is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicle
cases. It also helps reduce acidity and reduces irritation. Bananas stimulate the cells
on the internal stomach lining to produce a thicker mucus (which protects against acid).
Additionally, bananas contain protease inhibitors that help eliminate bacteria in
the stomach that have been pinpointed as a primary cause of ulcers.

12. Nerves
Bananas are high in B vitamins that have been shows to improve nerve function

13. Mosquito Bites
Many people report that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a mosquito bite is
very effective in reducing itching and swelling

14. Stress Relief
Bananas are high in potassium, which helps normalize the hearthbeat and regulate the
body’s water balance. During periods of high stress, our body’s potassium levels tend to
be rapidly depleted: eating bananas is a healthy way to rebalance them without using
drugs

15. Stroke Risk
According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part
of a regular diet can reduce the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%

Greek Yogurt:  My big fat Greek dollop

Greek yogurt is a thicker and creamier alternative to typical American-style yogurts. While some people may find the texture more appealing, Greek yogurt is also a healthy addition to your diet. The rich taste and texture of this yogurt can substitute for higher-fat dairy products, help maintain balance in your digestive tract and provide essential protein.
Protein

1. Protein
Greek yogurt has substantially more protein than standard American yogurt. Per ounce, Greek yogurt provides an additional gram of protein over typical non-fat yogurt, reports Katherine Hobson in the "US News" article "Greek Yogurt Vs. Regular Yogurt: Which Is More Healthful?" If you opt for a typical 6-oz. serving of Greek yogurt, you'll have consumed a full 15 grams of protein. Additional protein can help you to feel full and satisfied.

2. Reduced Sugar
Greek yogurt is made by straining the whey off yogurt repeatedly to create its thick texture. Much of the natural sugar is removed during this process. According to Hobson, Greek yogurt has one-half the sugar of unsweetened, non-fat American-style yogurt. Flavored and sweetened Greek yogurts are available, but you can opt to add fresh fruit, sugar-free jam or your own sweetener to unsweetened, plain Greek yogurt.

3. Lactobacteria
Greek yogurt is minimally processed and has not been heat-treated. This provides you with essential healthy bacteria, including acidophilus, according to AskDrSears.com. Acidophilus and lactobacillus organisms can improve intestinal health, reduce diarrhea and even help to prevent vaginal yeast infections.

4. Calcium
Greek yogurt provides substantial amounts of calcium, and the calcium in yogurt is more easily absorbed due to live yogurt cultures, reports AskDrSears.com. While Greek yogurt provides slightly less calcium than some other yogurts, a 6-oz. serving provides nearly 20 percent of your daily calcium needs, according to "Greek Yogurt vs. Regular Yogurt."
